MATIAS BARZALLO
ABOUT ME
My name is Matias Barzallo, I am 17 years old and I was born the fist of April 2002 in Quito, Ecuador. Although I have lived my whole life in Quito my mother Renata is from Chone which sits near the coasts of Ecuador and my father Miguel from Cuenca which is located in the Andean region of Ecuador which we call Sierra. Since I was little I remember going to visit Cuenca and Chone very often, learning from their different cultures. I can consider my family to be a small family as we are my parents my sister Micaela and me, But including my cousins and other relatives from both my father and mothers side; well I still get to know new relatives I have never known before. Thanks to my father's Job I’ve had the opportunity to travel to most parts of Ecuador, such as the heights of Laguna Quilotoa, the Coasts of Manta, the Jungles of Pastaza and Lago Agrio. With each of these visits to his job I learnt something new or got to hear different stories from the place.

My family is very united and we support each other all the time, even though my sister lives in the USA because of her university we all keep in touch and very united. Since I was 7 years old I live in a small plantation where we have grown berries, corn, tree tomato, strawberries, peaches, beans, lemons, avocados, plums, wheat and babaco. And since I was little I remember going out with my father to see the plantations and eat a lot of fruits, and thanks to my father's ambition with plants and vegetation I have always been curious about the Biodiversity of the world but mostly about Ecuador since each time I travelled to a new part of this amazing country I found different and unique biodiversities.

Firstly Beyond Lagartococha was just a IB CAS project but after going to my first trip to Mañoco and Painkenape my mindset of community service and the less fortunate changed completely and thanks to the Amazing and unique experience I had I became an integrate of the Third Generation and set as a goal to myself to help this project as much as I can and to involve myself in more community service projects. I also became more conscious of the problems that are happening around the world and Beyond Lagartococha helps me to give a hand to people in need and also to learn from them and what a beautiful place the Amazon is but it also helped me change the idea of a person I want to be and by being part of this amazing group I will be able to start achieving that.
The initiative of Beyond Lagartococha of helping the communities but primarily help the kids with basic education which is an opportunity for them for when they grow up and help their community in the future. But also the project helped me understand that helping communities and the less fortunate is not just about giving money but giving the opportunities in life. But personally I think it will be impossible to teach them or give them as much as they have given me; all the knowledge and the life-changing experiences I went through in the trip really changed me, and change the way I see the world, from my ideology of sad and desperate people to happy and persistent people with dreams and needs, and thanks to this project I can help them try to accomplish their dreams and hopes |
