About Me:
My name is Joaquin Lalama and I am 16 years old. I was born on June 17, 2005 in Quito, Ecuador. Although I was born in Quito, I lived in El Salvador for a period of three years, but since I lived there from the ages of 2 to 5, I don’t remember much about it. I changed school in 2nd grade and I believe this change helped me grow as a person and to be more easy-going. Since I changed school I have taken any opportunity that comes my way to grow as a person and a leader. I have been involved in many activities throughout my life, which have taught me many skills that I use in my everyday life. I am the youngest of three brothers and we get along very well. In my family, family is the most important thing there is, this is why my family plays a huge role in my daily life. We are always there for each other and we count on each other to lift each other up. My family has shaped me into the person I am today and I am extremely grateful to them for all the values they have taught me.
Since I was little, I have truly enjoyed helping others and this has been a part of my life since I can remember. I believe that if you have the possibility to help others, whether it’s with small or big actions, you should always seize that opportunity. These actions can change someone's life more than one could imagine and it will cause happiness to someone else. I have always tried to help and be generous to others. I try to take every opportunity to do community service. My family and I have participated in a project called: “Un techo para mi país”, in which people gather together to build houses for those who need it. I have also participated in many projects of community service that the organization of NJHS and NHS organize in my school. I really love doing community service and seeing the impact it can make on society. I was first introduced to Beyond Lagartococha by my brother Juan Ignacio who is a member of generation two. Ever since my brother told me everything about it, I couldn’t wait to be part of this amazing project.
Beyond Lagartococha is a beautiful foundation where you don’t only help others, but it allows you to grow as a person, too. In this project, we have help with the education of indigenous communities that are located in the frontier of Ecuador and Peru. This is a place where most people wouldn’t even imagine communities living in there and to bring them something as essential as education, is truly impressive to me. I joined this project because this was an opportunity to not just make a great impact on children's lives, but for adults too. This project is unique because it’s not run by adults, it is rather driven by a group of students, which I feel adds more meaning to it. Since I became part of Beyond Lagartococha, I have learned greatly from the Secoya community and their traditions, culture, language, and many more things. I was able to visit them for a week and I have never felt such satisfaction and immense joy at seeing the smile on the kids' faces. I am extremely grateful to be part of this amazing group.
