About Me:
My name is Elena Moreno and I was born on the 10th of March 2003, in Quito, Ecuador. I am the daughter of, my father who is Ecuadorian and my mother, who is an American. The fact of living in a different culture household has allowed me to develop and learn to be open minded, loving, caring and much more. Since my childhood, I've grown up surrounded by my family, meeting up almost every weekend to spend time together, showing me the importance of quality time and enjoying every moment you have with your loved ones. I must say thanks to my family, especially my brothers and sisters; Isabela who is 28, Nicolas who is 27, Rosario who is 25 and Enrique who is 23, I've always had the need to help others. My family has a huge impact on my life, and I thank them with all my heart, because I am who I am thanks to them. Also, they have always given me the opportunity and support into working toward what I love, especially in my career of psychology.
Since I can remember I have always participated in volunteering, collecting donations, and helping people in need. In school I had the opportunity to create a program with which ever purpose, I decided that my project was going to be a big book donation of books to a school in need; it was a hard working project and took time, nonetheless, the moment I saw the faces of the kids while receiving the books made it all worth it; and not only the happiness they bring me, it is the fact that something that is not as necessary for someone, is something indispensable for others. I fully believe that everybody should be conscious of what they have and always look for a way for helping others, because, in the end of the day, if you can help, what is stopping you? Each experience, not everything I've done but also heard has shaped me into the person I am now.
Beyond Lagartococha must be the best experience I've had, it changed me. I had heard of this amazing project because I saw a video that Micaela Borja had posted; I started my research and finally found the opening for the new volunteers. During the process of selection, I had the best feeling and knew that it was this project that would change my life, which, in fact, did. I not only was surrounded by people that had my same view on life, but I was surrounded by one of the most hard-working people. This was one of the hardest years for the foundation because we were hit by the pandemic, and we had to get our funds despite COVID-19. That is one of the things I will remember forever because we all worked very hard and finally provided everything for the communities. Sadly because of the situation we were going through, I could not attend the final trip and visiting the communities; no matter the trip or not, I worked very hard into getting every piece of donation and help as possible, because it is not for me, but it is for the Secoya's.
It has had huge impact on my life and has taught me how simple and fragile life is; to enjoy every second we have in earth and if you can help others, don’t doubt in doing so. I thank my family for teaching me that life is about other things than materials and teaching me everything I know and follow. I also thank Juliana Pallares for creating this amazing organization and allowing others to be part of it. I will forever be grateful with all my teammates for the amazing work and always working towards the same objective. It's an eye and heart opening experience.
