ADAM FINNEGAN
Who is Adam?
I have lived in Quito, Ecuador for 18 years now and I am still amazed about the beauty of this country. My mother Yvette Perez was born in Ecuador and my father David Finnegan was born in Boston Massachusetts. I am so thankful to have the ability to be fluent in both English and Spanish. When I was seven my mother hired a new cook and she came to live with us with her daughter who has Down Syndrome. I never felt that she was someone different than me I treated her as my little sister. That relationship made me believe that I should help the people around me and that is when I started going every Christmas to a foundation that feeds disabled and less fortunate kids. This was called the Jonathan Foundation. Through my high school I have had the opportunity to do a great amount of community service but I have also enjoyed playing sports (Varsity Soccer, Varsity Basketball, Tennis, Golf and Baseball), and in my junior year I served on Student Government.

This project all started with one of my best friends Dionne Highley. Our mutual desire to help Indigenous communities instantly brought us together. This group started with an idea and now we have accomplished more than what we could have ever imagined. Everyone has an obligation to help those in need. This project has pushed me to care deeply about this environment and the people that live in it. People don’t take into consideration the change they can make as individuals or in group. With this project, we have given these children the opportunity for further education and happiness. I am blessed to have had this opportunity to work together and help this community.
I value the significance of innovation. Thanks to other opportunities my school has given me I have been able to help the elders by assisting them for 6 straight Saturdays at my school, doing fun activities. The school has also offered us to build a home for a less fortunate family in Otavalo. I participated at a survival camp called Zurita for three years, during which I won the award for best camper and was honored to receive it for my passions in mountain climbing and sightseeing. I worked for two summers at a restaurant called Bandana's in St Louis Missouri, where I was a waiter, a cook and got to be a Manager. I love the whole Ranching and agricultural part of the world and that's why I am grateful I have received the opportunities to work in a restaurant and an internship at a friend's farm working as a rancher with cattle, crops and irrigation.
In awards, the one I am most proud of is being published in my school’s anthology, Strokes. I was published for my creative writing skills and my poetry skills. I consider myself an eager learner because I always have an open mind and always ask why. I like to get my hands dirty when I learn and I like to learn in the field. In the future I would like to have my own farm where I could teach people about my work and how to be a successful and innovative farmer.
